Scooter Causes $650K Fire That Displaced Two Derwood Families (Video)

At least a dozen people including several children have been displaced after an accidental fire caused over half a million dollars in damages to a Derwood home.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue were called to a townhouse on Hiawatha Lane around 8 a.m., Thursday, April 13.

Officials arrived to find the heavy fire conditions in the townhouse and were able to confirm that all occupants got out safely. 

The fire began in the basement of the townhouse after an electrical scooter caught fire at a charging station, igniting nearby combustibles.

The fire extended into the interior stairwell, burning it out. The neighboring townhouse was also damaged in the fire.

At least 12 people, including 5 children were displaced after the fire caused an estimated $650,000 in damages.

Around 65 firefighters arrived to help combat the fire and were able to get the bulk of it out by the early afternoon hours of Thursday, April 13.
